Condo board election at the general meeting

Who can run, how the vote works, and for how long: the complete guide to electing condo board members at the general meeting.

The condo board is elected by the general meeting, and its partial or full renewal regularly comes up on the agenda. Understanding the rules of this election helps both potential candidates and the co-owners who vote.

Who can run for the board?

Any co-owner, their spouse, or their legal representative can run for the board, with no specific qualification required. A non-resident co-owner can also serve, unless the condo bylaws state otherwise.

How does the vote work at the general meeting?

Electing board members requires an absolute majority (a majority of all co-owners, whether present or not). If that majority is not reached, a second vote by simple majority of those present can be enough, under the conditions set by law.

How long is an elected member’s term?

The condo bylaws usually set the term length, often three years, renewable. A member can resign at any time; a replacement can then be proposed at the next general meeting.

Running for the board: good reasons to take the step

Joining the board means taking a direct part in decisions about your living environment, having a clear view of how the building is managed, and helping improve communication between co-owners and the property manager.

  • Keep a close eye on the condo’s projects and budget.
  • Help facilitate dialogue between co-owners and the property manager.
  • Take part in decisions that shape the building for years to come.

Once elected, having the right tools to work efficiently day to day makes all the difference. CoproHarmony centralizes documents, issues, votes, and communication so every board member can contribute without it taking forever.
